Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Quaker?

“I’ve heard the word before, but I’m not sure what Quakers believe.”

Quakers are people from many backgrounds who seek spiritual depth and clarity through silent worship and shared values like peace, integrity, equality, and simplicity. We don’t follow a set creed but listen inwardly for truth, guided by what we call the “inner light.”

Do Quakers believe in God or the bible, like Christians?

Quakerism has Christian roots, and many Quakers draw from Christian traditions. Others find meaning in different spiritual paths. Our meetings are open to people of all beliefs — what unites us is our way of worship and our commitment to living with integrity and compassion.

What happens at a Meeting for Worship? Is it like a church?
“Is it like a sermon or service?”

We gather in stillness. There’s no minister or sermon, no creed, no formal service or hymns — just a shared quiet space. Most meetings are held in complete silence. People often leave feeling grounded, refreshed, or quietly moved.

Do I have to speak or do anything?
“Will I be expected to do or say anything?”

No — you are free to simply sit and observe. There is no pressure or expectation to speak, pray, or participate in any specific way. Just bring your presence.

Can I come if I’m not religious?
“Will I be expected to do or say anything?”

Yes. Many who attend are unsure of what they believe, or don’t identify with any religion. You don’t need to believe anything specific to join us. All are welcome to explore in their own way.

Is it okay to just try it once?

Absolutely. Many people come out of curiosity — and some find they want to return. There’s no obligation, no membership, no pressure. Just come and see.

What should I wear or bring?

There’s no dress code — come as you are. There’s nothing you need to bring, though you’re welcome to bring a journal or notebook if you like.

Can children attend?

Yes. Children are welcome. If you’d like to check in beforehand about what’s available for young people, feel free to contact us.

Where and when do you meet?

We meet every Sunday at 10:00am in the Northcote Senior Citizens hall, 119  Queens St, Northcote Point, Auckland 0627.
For details, visit our Meeting for Worship page or contact us directly — we’d love to hear from you. Many Quakers draw from Christian roots, but beliefs and language vary. What unites us is not doctrine but a shared spiritual practice — worship based in silence, where anyone may speak if moved by the Spirit. You don’t need to hold any particular belief to attend or feel welcome.
